Haunted by Hope

Saw a family, living in a slum in terrible poverty today. Three children, going to a free government school, barefoot. Father is a laborer, making just enough money get cheapest accommodation in slum (much below the minimum human dignity) and barely enough food. Somehow he has to(?) /is making some space for his alcohol too. Clean drinking water is a luxury even in thoughts. When I saw him, he was talking to some social worker who is sponsoring some children in his neighborhood to go to school. He was pleading hard to take at least one of her children, preferably the girl. He was drunk in that moment, perhaps he knew that there was not enough chance that this female social worker will accept his request. But, he didn't gave up.

Saw a young man, graduated from a very fine collage, worked at a big corporation for few years, gave-up his job in pursuit of his own business. Making good profit in the new trade but also feeling empty inside. He want to do something "more meaningful". Now planning to start some charitable activities. When I saw him, he was discussing the necessity of good schools in villages.

Saw a monk, living a renounced life. Depending on other's kindness for his survival and giving 'spiritual' teachings, performing rituals in exchange. He was living in a small temple alone but still was very sociable. When I saw him, he had just finished his evening chanting schedule and giving "teachings" to a bunch of old women about the vapidity of the world. These women where his only regular audience.
